Gift guide for wine lovers
What do you buy a wine lover for Christmas, their birthday or any other celebration? Our managing director, Thomas Shaw, has some tips…
Thomas said: “Giving a gift of wine itself is quite tricky, unless you know the recipient really likes a particular wine. We’ve all been given wine and thought ‘I wouldn’t have chosen that!’.
“If you know what they like, go to a vineyard like Three Choirs or a wine merchant and buy some bottles of their favourite. You don’t have to buy a case of 12 – you can buy just one or two bottles, whatever you can afford. Good wine is expensive, so be cautious and don’t break the bank.”
While favourite wines are a personal choice, we know which of our wines are always popular for the festive season.
Our sparkling Classic Cuvee will be the biggest seller as people stock up for the festive season. Ravens Hill red will be very popular, as will our own brandy. But the choice of wine should always be individual.
Thomas said: “People tend to think they should drink more red than white in winter. But it’s personal choices - if you prefer white wine, drink white wine! There are some beautiful full-bodied whites on the market, and they will go just as well with all the Christmassy foods as the reds.”
In the run-up to Christmas, there are lots of special offers online from wine merchants offering mixed cases.
Thomas added: “In my experience, you get three or four bottles that are good and some which are not so good. That’s how they keep the prices down. So, I’d avoid those mixed cases. A local wine merchant and of course your local vineyard can advise on the best wines. So go along and speak to a human!”
Here at Three Choirs Vineyard, we offer our own discounted mixed cases – and you get to decide which wines you include. Buy 12 or more bottles and save 15% or buy 24 or more bottles and save 20%.
If you know they love wine, but don’t know which wine they like, a better gift option would be a voucher for a wine experience. Here at Three Choirs Vineyard, we sell a variety of vouchers to suit all budgets.
A popular choice is a voucher for a wine tasting tour and lunch in our Brasserie. This includes the chance to try a selection of our wines, find out about the wine making process and get an insight into the background of Three Choirs Vineyards.
Thomas continued: “With a voucher, they can learn more, taste more, enjoy the experience and maybe take a bottle of their favourite home.”
We also offer vouchers from as little as £10, which can be put towards wine tasting, accommodation, meals in the Brasserie or for any wine purchase at our Gloucestershire vineyard. Vouchers don’t have to be allocated to a particular person and can be passed on or regifted if anyone changes their mind.
And for something (or someone) really special, we have vouchers for overnight stays, including wine tasting, in our beautiful vineyard.
In our shop at the vineyard, we have wine accessories from bottle openers to cold sleeves if you’re looking for a stocking filler and are in the area (we don’t sell them online!).
Thomas concluded: “Buy what you, your family and friends enjoy and have a merry Christmas! When you’re giving a gift to a wine lover, if you don’t know exactly what they like, it’s best to give vouchers, so they’ve got scope to choose and enjoy our wine.”
